The book of Obadiah is the smallest book in the Old Testament with just one chapter of 21 verses. Its focus is God's judgement on Edom for its pride and for exploiting Judah when Jerusalem was under attack. Edom was a nation that descended from Esau. It starts: "This is what the Sovereign Lord says about Edom... I will make you small among the nations... because the pride of your heart has deceived you... I will bring you down from the height of an eagle says the Lord... Esau will be ransacked... your friends will deceive and overpower you... I will destroy the wise men of Edom... because of your violence against your brother Jacob... you didn't help him when he needed it... you should not rejoice in the day of your brother's destruction... for the day of the Lord is near for all nations... as you have done so it will be done to you... but on Mount Zion will be deliverance... the house of Jacob will be a fire and the house of Esau will be stubble - set on fire and consumed... and there will be no survivors... Deliverers will go up on Mount Zion to govern the mountains of Esau. And the kingdom will be the Lord's".
