Hosea 6 shows Israel discussing returning to the Lord yet God sees this as superficial and lacking in commitment. The text shows that initially Israel cogitates: "Come let us return to the Lord, he has torn us to pieces but he will heal us... let us acknowledge the Lord... as surely as the sun rises he will appear". However God sees through their apparent reconciliation and reacts: "Your love is like the morning mist... therefore I cut you in pieces... for I desire mercy rather than sacrifice, and acknowledgement of God rather than burnt offerings... but like Adam they have broken the covenant... committing shameful crimes... Ephraim is given to prostitution and Israel is defiled. Also for you Judah a harvest is appointed".
