Hosea 8 warns of impending judgement for a people that maintain superficial religiosity as a cover for a broken covenant distant from God. "The people have broken my covenant although they pretend to acknowledge me... they set up kings without my consent... and make idols from silver and gold... throw out your calf-idol O Samaria!... they sow the wind and reap the whirlwind... Israel has gone up to Assyria like a wild donkey... Ephraim has sold herself to lovers... they offer sacrifices to me and eat the meat... now the Lord will remember their wickedness and punish their sins... Israel has forgotten his maker... so I will send fire on their cities".
