Paul defended himself before the Sanhedrin saying he had "fulfilled his duty to God in all good conscience". Then Paul made a clever ploy saying, "I stand on trial because of my hope in the resurrection of the dead". Thus he sparked off an uproar between the Sadducees (who didn't believe in the resurrection) and the Pharisees (who did). Eventually the Roman Commander called off the over heated debate and extracted Paul bringing him to the barracks. There then ensued a conspiracy by the Jews to murder Paul, but the commander got word of this and thwarted the threat. Then Paul was transferred to Caesarea under heavy guard and given over to Governor Felix with a covering letter from the Jerusalem Roman Commander. Paul was then kept under guard whilst they waited for the Jewish leaders to bring charges against him.
