Ephesians 4 (résumé): Unity in the Body of Christ

Paul now switches from teaching the Ephesians about what the Lord has done for them in Christ to how they should live as Christians. Paul says: "I urge you to live a life worthy of your calling... be humble, patient, gentle and loving... keep the unity of the Spirit... serving one God who is over all... and he has given gifts of leadership to the church of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers... to prepare the church for service... to build it up to maturity and the fulness of Christ... so that we won't be shaken by every wind of doctrine... but will speak the truth in love... and grow up in Christ the head". Paul then goes on to exhort the Ephesians to live as children of the light and not as the gentiles who have lost all sensitivity and given themselves over to sensuality and impurity. You were taught, he said, to put off the old man and be made new in the attitude of your minds... and put on the new man created in God's likeness with true righteousness and holiness. Be careful, he says, not to give the devil a foothold... and he who had been stealing to steal no longer... and to refrain from unwholesome talk... taking care not to grieve the Holy Spirit... and be kind and compassionate to one another".
